Bill Owens

Bill Owens served in the Peace Corp before studying photojournalism and working for a smalltown newspaper in the 1960s and ’70s. It was during his time at the paper that he began noticing the rise of a particular culture taking shape in the California suburbs. His clear-eyed portraits and tableaus led to the seminal photo book, Suburbia, as well as Our Kind Of People, Working: I Do It For The Money, and Leisure. He received a prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship in 1975. His work is held in major institutions as well as in the collection of Elton John.
